How to Fight Anxiety (& Impostor Syndrome) During Job Seeking

      1st May 2024

Anxiety can be intense at the best of times and, when it feels like your whole future is on the line, it’s normal to get a little shaky. Job seeking is often an intimidating process, with feelings of impostor syndrome making the challenge ten times harder.

Our Tips for Fighting Anxiety During Job Seeking

In order to actually land a position in today’s complex recruitment climate, you need to put yourself out there. You must overcome the doubt and keep pushing through.

      1. Prioritise Your Mental Health

Whether you’re currently unemployed or in a role that you hate, take some time to care for yourself. Go for a walk, have a bath, or indulge in one of your favourite hobbies. Don’t just stare at job boards for hours on end, this will only make you spiral!

      2. Ignore that “Little Voice”

Although it will be difficult, try to push past the little voice that says you aren’t good enough. You are. Use positive reaffirmations to remind yourself that you’re amazing and any recruiter would be lucky to meet you.

      3. Remain Positive

Don’t waste your energy worrying about jobs that reject or ghost you, the perfect match will appear. Focus on the good things (like getting invited for an interview) and you’ll soon build a better mindset for overcoming various challenges.

      4. Go For it Anyway

We’ve all stared at a job posting that seems perfect, other than that one “MUST HAVE” skill. Don’t worry. You can learn on the job. Job listings are used as guides by recruiters, so you don’t necessarily have to tick every box. Rather than fixating on all the little details, send in your application!

      5. Prepare, Prepare, Prepare

Going into an interview feeling underprepared is bound to trigger your anxiety, so why not spend some time getting ready? Plan out some answers to common interview questions, rehearse a warm and friendly greeting, and look back over your resume to refamiliarise yourself with it.

      6. Get Someone on Your Side

Your best friend, a family member, or your partner can make exceptional cheerleaders during the job seeking process. Be honest about the journey you are going through (especially if your financial circumstances have changed!) and get their support as you apply for roles. Bye, bye anxiety!
