      How to Obtain Job Security

      31st October 2024

As the United Kingdom gets flooded with horror stories about budget cuts and employee layoffs, it’s normal to feel anxious about the future. Instead of letting yourself spiral and worry, start focusing on something that you can control… obtaining job security.

Step 1. Expand Your Skill Set

When a business is forced to make layoffs, they’ll start by reviewing their staff – aiming to keep multi-talented, flexible individuals who can wear a variety of hats. Over the next few months, look to gain experience in adjacent departments to yours (ie. sales and advertising if you work in marketing).

Step 2. Be a Problem Solver

When facing uncertainty, a business needs creative thinkers who can help them overcome every hurdle. As issues arise within your company, don’t be afraid to show initiative and seek a solution for the problem. How you act in times of crisis will prove your worth as an employee, demonstrate irreplaceable leadership skills, and help you obtain job security.

      Step 3. Take Ownership

How much value do you provide?

As your employer looks to reduce spending and make cuts, you need to be purposeful in demonstrating your skills and experience around the workplace. Keep track of your accomplishments and make sure these are emphasised at your next performance review, taking ownership and pride in the work you do to secure your future.

Step 4. Get Frank to Avoid Surprises

Every leader should be willing to be upfront with you. If layoffs are on the horizon, it’s okay for you to book a meeting with your management team to seek more information about where you stand. This will either provide assurance that your job isn’t going anywhere or offer notice that something, such as a company restructure, is coming.

Time to put a back-up plan in place!

      Step 5. Establish Alternatives

An employer facing uncertainty doesn’t guarantee job insecurity. In fact, by being open to working elsewhere, you might find that layoffs mean more opportunity – not less!

      Start…

      1. Proactively checking job boards for new, hybrid, positions being listed.
      2. Expanding your network just in case something does go awry.
      3. Updating and polishing off your CV.
      4. Considering a training course or two to bump you up the career ladder.
      5. Speaking to RC&A about our candidate placement services.
