How can you prove you’ll be a good leader if you’re never given the opportunity?
Next time your team has to tackle a specific task (such as hitting a specific target or getting a project over the line by a due date), speak to your boss about being the overseer. You’ll need to get them to put you in charge, allowing you to showcase your people management skills.
But… be warned! Becoming a project manager (even for the day) will demand a lot of you. You’ll be expected to continue fulfilling your usual tasks while still going above and beyond. Make sure you’re ready to handle it.
We could go ahead and ask any staff member in any team whether or not they’d like a promotion. If it comes with a nice salary increase, the answer is probably yes – unless their still finding their feet. As such, you can’t just expect a promotion. You have to prove yourself worthy of one. Whenever you put in overtime or participate in additional training, keep a record of evidence
Once you’re ready and have all your ducks in a row, it’s time to face your boss. It will feel scary to put yourself out there but taking the initiative and making your desire clear is just another way you can prove you’re ready to move up the ladder.
