How to Make an Effective Recruitment Offer

      11th January 2023

“Thank you for reaching out. I’m afraid I’ve already accepted a job elsewhere.”

These are the words that fill every leader with dread. After all that time spent:

      1. Attracting top talent.
      2. Conducting background research.
      3. Interviewing individuals multiple times.
      4. Deciding who should be hired.

They finally get the go-ahead to extend a job offer to their favourite candidate and, in one seemingly inconsequential moment, it’s all gone to waste.

Sure, they could move on to the second person on their list… but they’ll always feel the loss of what they could have had. It’s not ideal.

The Biggest Mistake You Can Make in Recruitment

Sadly, securing talent in today’s competitive climates isn’t just about:

      1. Selecting a competitive salary.
      2. Listening to candidate needs.
      3. Offering additional work benefits.

It’s a little more complex than that. It’s also about positioning yourself correctly, being in the right place, and acting at the right time.

Too often, leaders (just like you) waste too many days finalising their decision before moving on to the next step of their recruitment process.

Time and time again, this has proven to be detrimental to overall hiring efforts. Why? Well, it guarantees the loss of top candidates.

The Consequences of Long Recruitment Processes

Quality employees with sought-after skills aren’t going to be sitting at home twiddling their thumbs.

If they’ve set a goal to get a new job, they’ll be proactive in making it happen.

There will be other job applications, interviews, and negotiations taking place – some of which will have been in progress before you even listed an opening with your company.

It’s scary (but not entirely unsolvable). As long as you plan ahead by following a clear recruitment strategy and Employer Value Proposition, you can significantly reduce the amount of time wasted throughout the entire process.

Tips for Making the Right Recruitment Offer

To succeed in making an effective recruitment offer, you need to find the balance between acting with haste and not rushing your decision. There are a few ways you can make this happen…

Step 1: Outline Your Dream Candidate

Before you start accepting job applications, there’s some work to be done.

You can only proceed when you have a clear idea of what your dream candidate would look like so that when you find them… you can make an offer straight away.

      Ask yourself:

      1. What skills would my ideal employee need?
      2. What level of experience would my ideal employee need?
      3. What characteristics would my ideal employee need?

As you start to create a persona (one that will be incredibly useful to you in streamlining your recruitment process), remain realistic.

Say, for example, you’re hiring a candidate for an entry-level position. Of course, it would be nice to recruit with a whole list of qualifications, but this won’t always be possible.

You should be willing to provide training, too.

      Step 2: Conduct Industry Research

How niche is the role you are recruiting for? Is there lots of competition in the market?

If so, then you’ll have to be smart with your recruitment. Multiple other companies could be tapping into the same talent pool you are – making it tough to cut through all that noise.

Therefore, before you start interviewing candidates, you need to identify exactly what a potential employee would want from you.

This way, you can take the time to assign the right resources to your recruitment efforts before getting started on your journey. This will stop you from making an underwhelming offer that ultimately gets rejected.

The last thing you want to do is risk losing a desirable candidate simply because:

      1. The finance department denied your budget request.
      2. The finance team took too long to reply to you.

Step 3. Request the Right Information

One of the biggest delays to all recruitment processes is communication.

Busy candidates aren’t going to be able to reply quickly, but back-and-forth emails can soon become time-consuming and frustrating for both parties.

So, from the very start of your hiring efforts, you need to make it really clear what you want from your candidates. If you have a specific goal or requirement that you absolutely won’t negotiate on, this should be made clear in your job listing.

Not only will this significantly decrease the number of unsuitable applicants (similarly speeding up your time-to-hire), but it’ll help you in the long run.

Rather than wasting valuable days requesting reference information from an applicant, for example, you’ll be able to launch into making the appropriate calls and getting honest feedback.

Before you know it, you’ll be ready to identify the best candidate for your business.
