Networking on LinkedIn can be a minefield when done incorrectly.
You risk annoying the professionals you’re trying to work with, making outreach an especially intimidating process for job seekers looking for their next big opportunity.
So, next time you fantasise about your dream workplace, instead of reaching out to CEOs galore, instead try speaking to recruiters.
They are likely looking for passionate candidates just like you and will have the knowledge needed to boost your career.
Tip 1: Update Your Profile
However, before you start your hunt, there’s one thing that needs to be completed: updating your profile. Make sure to use LinkedIn’s “Open to Work” feature, as this could help you in the long run.
Ultimately, a recruiter who lands on an empty LinkedIn page will be unable to gather the vital information required to find you a job opportunity. Make sure to list your experience, education, and skills as a matter of priority.
Tip 2: Search for Industry Specialists
Whether you are looking for an entry-level position or the highest available job on your career ladder, seeking out industry specialists rather than recruitment generalists is the way to go.
They’ll be the ones communicating and negotiating on your behalf, and they should be well aware of the value your unique skill set can bring to an employer. There’s no point detailing how proficient you are in Web 3 if the middle-(wo)man doesn’t know what you’re talking about.
All you have to do is use LinkedIn’s internal search bar, with your keyword/industry included. For example, try searching “Digital Recruiter” or “Technology Recruiter”. This information is usually clearly listed in a recruiter’s LinkedIn about section, helping you find the right people easily.
Tip 3: Conduct Research
The recruiter you are considering should have more than a simple presence on LinkedIn.
They should be actively involved and engaged with online communities, sharing industry information, job opportunities, candidate tips, and responding to any comments and queries (which can all be found in the “Activity” tab).
Additionally, check out the “Recommendations” section on their profile to get a good idea of their reputation.
Tip 4: Write Your Message
When you’ve identified a recruiter who’s sure to have your best interests at heart, it’s time to send your message. Be:
Even if you’re not good with words, following these 4 rules will help you build a message that’s useful and comprehensible for the recruiter.
Also, where possible, consider adding your CV to the message. This provides the recruiter with the chance to get a good idea of who you are and what you can do – helping them find you a caring employer who prioritizes your wellbeing.
Tip 5: Wait and Respond!
Be careful about messaging multiple times and try to have patience.
Working with a recruiter who is busy is a great sign for the success of your future career! It means they are in high demand, but they are sure to get back to you as soon as possible.
When you get a reply, you might have been:
Either way – make sure you’re ready to respond. You never know what could come of it.
Despite the current conversations about cold outreach on LinkedIn, it’s still a useful platform for anyone determined to find an engaging and rewarding job position.
Be smart with your networking approach and you’ll soon find a responsive and supportive recruiter.
