According to a recent study by the FDM Group, a significant majority of Generation Z (66%) view job hopping as ‘crucial’ to their career advancement. They are now prioritising skill development over traditional job loyalty; buffing up their CV, reentering the job market, and negotiating better pay.
One UK employee, Marissa, was able to gain a £8,000 pay increase just by switching employers when the time was right. For a country of workers struggling to keep up with the rising Cost of Living, this benefit is too big to ignore. For a country of businesses struggling to retain qualified staff… this is another challenge to overcome.
Alongside the promise of a better salary, job hopping offers rapid career advancement, wide industry experience, and improved work engagement.
Candidates who are constantly moving positions aren’t staying in one place long enough to get bored, allowing them to temporarily boost productivity and help a business get back on top. What’s not to love?
After their first few years in the workplace, Gen-Z employees will be skilled, confident, and have a roster of high-quality contacts to carry them through the rest of their careers.
For some employers, hiring a jobhopper feels like a risk. This means that mobile candidates face additional struggles with finding positions… especially if they’ve already moved jobs a few times in the last two years.
Why?
Well, employee turnover isn’t easy to manage. When you have a whole generation of workers who won’t commit to longer than 12 months with your company, it can be hard to plan for the future. This scares businesses.
Job hopping can be key to accelerating your career during the early stages. As long as you stay at each workplace long enough to receive value (and provide it), you’ll leave with some handy connections and positive references.
That doesn’t mean it’s for everyone, though.
Job hopping can be anxiety-inducing and stressful – requiring you to always be quick on your feet. Always make sure to explore your internal options for career advancement before throwing in the towel.
A simple, bold, conversation could get you that promotion you’ve been angling for.
You can’t avoid hiring job hoppers.
As the number of young workers buying into this trend continues to tick upward, you have to embrace talent mobility. You should then use your culture, benefits, and advancement opportunities to convince them to stay.
When you have a career-hungry employee eager to prove themselves, ensure that you invest in a Learning & Development scheme. By keeping your team engaged and invested in the workplace, they may start to envision a future with you.
