Everyone deserves to feel safe and supported. In 2024, we believe that all workplaces should be actively pursuing inclusivity, ensuring that advancement opportunities are equally accessible to everyone.
You should be able to confidently be yourself without fear of repression, fretting that your race, sexuality, gender identity, age, or physical ability will affect your long-term career prospects.
Interestingly, there’s a lot of nuance involved when categorising whether a business is diverse or not… it’s not as simple as looking at demographics (although this, of course, is a part of it).
A company’s inclusivity efforts can be deduced from a range of different initiatives, so judge your workplace by its dedication to making conscious hiring decisions, eradicating bias through extensive training, and reducing workplace discrimination.
Whether you work in a small to medium enterprise or a mega-corporation, you should be able to look at the team in charge and see yourself reflected among them. Anybody can be an executive and, although there’s a tendency to picture older, caucasian men in positions of power, a company’s leadership should look a little more diverse… especially considering the benefits it offers.
Your voice should always be uplifted. Differences should be seen as an asset, not a hindrance, and unique ideas should be celebrated rather than dismissed. This type of validation is especially important in creative environments, where a blend of different perspectives has been proven to encourage out-of-the-box thinking.
Every company that has multiple employees should also have a clear diversity policy that encourages forward-thinking. Some can take this one step further by offering additional support to those less fortunate – awarding mentorship opportunities and career advice to anyone who needs extra guidance.
Inclusive action isn’t only important at an organisational level. Your fellow colleagues should be fully accepting of who you are, allowing you to flourish in an environment that actively cares for you. This is a critical building block to your success and will enable you to enjoy coming to work every day. As a part of this unconditional acceptance, microaggressions should be proactively challenged and dismantled.
Although a lot of workplaces are certainly becoming more considerate, very few are actively perfect. If you’ve been struggling to advance your career or feel like you are being treated differently because of your race, sexuality, gender identity, age, or physical ability, you deserve better.
At Ross Clifford & Associates, we make every effort to recruit in a socially conscious, inclusive fashion – placing the best candidate for the job in the roles we’re responsible for filling. Speak to us today to begin advancing your career prospects by securing a position in a workplace that cares.
